Indiana Bones and the World of Doom

So here I am, shamelessly exploiting our dog for blog content. I figured you could use some background though. I got Indy when she was about 11 weeks old.

Obligatory naked shot

Here she is napping with her first toy, the octopus.

IMAG0855She was already traumatized although I didn’t realize the extent of it until I got her home. She was scared of life and everything in it. When she was a puppy lots of things would quite literally scare the shit out of her including but not limited too small children (can’t blame her there), skateboards, any and all people, most things that made noise, doorways, stray leaves, suspicious looking toys and even me if I had been away for more than a few minutes. She seemed to think I might have changed and was suddenly out to get her. Her oldest friend Xiao Bao helps her learn how to be a real dog.

Here’s a good shot where she looks totally normal. No hint of the neurotic dog that darts through doorways, hides under the big table or accidentally craps themselves. She was very comfortable in my parents backyard in this pic although she did pee in the car on the way up there.

I spent a lot of time researching how to raise a dog and train them to be good. Indy’s disposition helped a lot too. She was too scared to misbehave. I took a beginner training class at pet smart which helped us get the basics down.

IMAG0989Eventually she got the whole potty training thing and I moved to a new apartment because I like carpets that haven’t been peed on… whatever, I’m picky like that.

Since then we’ve had a lot of great adventures. I’m always working on pushing her out of her comfort zone

IMAG0920Then we met Amanda and she had ideas for even more great adventures. We took her swimming and mountain climbing

wpid-20141225_132941.jpgand she bonded with Amanda in no time flat. I was suddenly second best when it came to getting pets, I’m pretty sure it’s mainly the fingernails though 😉 In fact, she was out there cheering Amanda on in her most recent marathon

wpid-20141102_093618.jpgWhen we moved in together Indy faced a new challenge. Molly, the guardian of the wench house, is a sassy and very dominant corgi. Indy’s baseline of mild panic increased to constant fear as she adjusted to living with new people and a bossy dog who felt like her territory had been invaded. After a while the friction between the two decreased and they are a little more tolerant of each other.

wpid-20140718_074141.jpgShe still get’s to have play dates with the dogs she like though. She loves her friends and knows them all by name. If we ask her if she wants to go see Xiao Bao or Copper then she starts jumping and whining until we go.

We’ve also recently relaxed rules about being on the bed. It took some time for Indy to be ok with being up on a people bed but now she loves it.

Saturday Scotch Surprise

Happy Sunday y’all! The sun is shining! Everything is covered in ice and it’s fucking cold outside! Ahh….perfect day to do absolutely nothing and stay inside.

Yesterday started out pretty miserable…read gray, raining, and cold…and ended up gorgeous. We took advantage of the miserable morning weather and went for a run. Fantastic idea right?! Honestly, I’m a bit of a weirdo and really enjoy rainy/cold running weather. I knooooow, one day I’ll catch a cold but till then, I’mma enjoy it. It was my longest run since the marathon and it felt fantastic.

Just took it nice and easy and ran at what felt comfortable the entire time.

After the run. We spent some time with the torture device foam roller. It was Steve’s first time really using it. I think he likes it!

wpid-20150124_140029.jpg

We went to Beasley’s Chicken and Honey for some late lunch/early dinner. Everything is good there. You really can’t go wrong when the staple of your menu is fried chicken. Even though Steve got catfish…wtf. It was super good, but we totally went there for chicken and catfish is not chicken.

Whilst there, we had the brilliant idea to have a man night. Man night consists of cigars and scotch. Buncha people came over and we did exactly that. We drank scotch and smoked cigars. A rousing game of Cards Against Humanity (with some Crabs Adjust Humidity thrown in there for shits and giggles) finished off the night.

A great way to end the day if you ask me 🙂

Here’s a great picture of Indy thrown in for good measure. Just cause she’s cute.

Do you have a lazy Sunday planned?

Winter is NOT coming

Last night we made another Blue Apron meal. For those who don’t know, Blue Apron is a pretty awesome food delivery service. They deliver recipes with all the correct quantities of ingredients (like a single stalk of celery or a little cup of bagoong) you need in a refrigerated box to your door.

20150119_175008We get 3 meals at a time and they’re supposed to serve two but we almost always have leftovers. The recipes are typically atypical and feature interesting ingredients and cultural influences. Last night we made a Mexican style casserole with beef, quinoa, veggies, cilantro and a few other things. It wasn’t our favorite so far but it wasn’t bad.

20150119_183917After dinner I spent a few hours buried in C code for a class I’m taking and then took a Dr. Who break. I needed the break after bashing my head against the monitor for hours. My coding skills are pretty rusty but I managed to get some peripherals for the microcontroller configured before stumbling to bed and rudely removing Indy from my her spot on the bed.

Today it was 67 degrees! I don’t think winter is coming no matter what the poor mostly dead Stark family says oops, spoiler ;)hmm, now I want GoT to come back… and House of Cards, yay TV!

Amanda and I decided to cancel our TRX class in the basement dungeon of the old NCSU gym and leave work early to take advantage of the sun and the warmth. We wanted to run but decided that we should take it easy on our injuries since we ran yesterday. We did take Indy for a great walk though and she had an awesome time jumping in the creek and getting very stinky. 20150120_164840She would disappear from time to time over the bank of the creek but would always come bounding back soon.

Spot the Indy!

Tonight, more Blue Apron, yay! More Dr. Who, yay! and more coding, blerrg.

Camera Shy

Hi! Happy Monday! (If there is such a thing)

Today’s a bit of a slow day since we’ve got the day ‘off’ for MLK day. We lazed in bed and watched  whole episodes of Dr. Who before actually getting the day started. Well…ok I made coffee for the second episode but that’s just the basics.

Since it’s such a weird great/gorgeous day outside, we went for a run!!

20150119_111938

Now, for those of you in the know I think running is kinda awesome. And during my last marathon (City of Oaks), I inconveniently tore my IT band and haven’t run in a couple months. Needless to say, I’ve been a little cooped up and frustrated….sorry Steve.

20150119_112006

So I took it short and slow and had NO KNEE PAIN!!! (insert backflip/happy dance). I also got to try out my new heart rate monitor. That’s the number with the heart next to it, aka my Garmin not-so-secretly loves me or has approximately 167 loves.

Indy came on the run with us and had a great time trying, and failing, to catch the squirrels. One day….

We tried to get a picture of how happy she was, but she’s a little camera shy and refuses to look at me when I’m holding my phone. Seriously, she’ll back up to you when you call her. Weirdo. (Note Steve trying to get her to look at me. Oh well)

20150119_112054

I’m off to get a little work done since grad school never sleeps. Seriously. It never does.

What are you up to if you have the day off?
